History of Supermoto in the Northwest
What is Supermoto?

Simply put, supermoto is a race event where the participants race a motorcycle that is capable of travel on both dirt and pavement.  The pavement sections may be permanent tracks such as a karting center, or maybe a specifically configured parking lot somewhere. The dirt sections are motocross inspired, but not as demanding as a full MX track.

Here's Wikipedia defines supermoto:

The history of SupermotoUSA

Supermoto racing in the northwest was started in 1997 by racing enthusiasts that also were members of the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association. The races in our area were run as classes within the race days put on by WMRRA.

In 1998 Chuck Sun and Don Canet worked to build a separate entity known as Super TT or STTARS.  The races were still being run alongside the WMRRA events, but with their own rules and organization.

At the end of the 1998 it became clear that Don was not going to be able to coordinate all of the local races in Washington and California at the same time.  Kim and Carl Blake stepped up to become the promoters in our area. Carl and Kim put their heart and soul into building a successful race organization.  Supermoto simply wouldn't exist in our area without their hard work.

In 2002, the Blakes and Brok McAllister created a partnership to promote amateur racing in Washington, Oregon and Northern California. Supermoto USA was born. The initial idea was to unify all of the regional amateur organizations across the country into a single cohesive unit.  This turned out to be impractical and the idea was scrapped.  Instead, Supermoto USA focused on what it does best: promoting regional level racing in Northern California, Washington and Oregon.

In 2003 Supermoto USA put on the first AMA Grand National Supermoto Championship.  At the end of 2003, there was agreement that the Northern California Series and the Northwest Series would work more independently, but still maintain a working relationship.

At the end of the 2003 season, Carl and Kim decided that it was time for them to retire from the racing world for a while.

That's where our story begins.

To insure the survival of supermoto racing in the northwest region Supermoto USA was acquired by Ron West and Kurt Hansen. Ron and Kurt have been racers in the NW Series since 1999.  Ron also promoted the Northwest Mini Road Racing Series in our area from 1999-2003.

In the time between when we took over this series, to the current date we have had a huge amount of change:

  • We've added tracks and event in just about every region of the Northwest.

  • Established partnerships with regionally focused promoters to help the business of supermoto make sense

  • Established a viable series that not only allows riders to race and practice locally, but travel to other challenging facilities.

  • Establishment of an Executive board. The executive board (aka eboard) is responsible for defining the rules of the group and for their enforcement.

Our aspirations are simple:

  1. Preserve supermoto racing in our region
  2. Increase the rider base in our region
  3. Increase the number of available race facilities
  4. Have fun

It's that simple.  We are racers putting on events for other racers.  We aren't doing this for glory or money.

We just want to race.
